Previously, on Tomorrow Waits For No One: Frank taunted "Gian" (Marcus) with information about his past causing all of Marcus's memories to return.  Marcus fell into a state of catatonia and was rushed to the hospital.  Dr. Martinez informed Cole of the turn of events.  Cole asked Ginny to fly to Twin Creeks to look into mob activity there.  Dr. Park considered using electro-convulsive therapy on "Gian" (Marcus).

Philip surprised Rhonda at her apartment, apologizing for his recent behavior.  He admitted that he's afraid their relationship is becoming too serious.

Dr. Park consulted with the hospital's attorney about using ECT on "Gian" (Marcus).  Cole visited "Gian" (Marcus) and told he loved him.  Frank spied Cole leaving and darted in to visit Marcus.  He apologized
for taunting him.  Marcus awoke with his memories intact and asked Frank to help him find the stolen Van der Griff jewels.  Dr. Park nearly caught them scheming and questioned them both.  They lied, telling her "Gian" (Marcus) fell from a ladder.

Despite Dr. Park's and Dr. Martinez's objections, "Gian" (Marcus) was released from the hospital.  Dr. Park shared with Dr. Martinez that she is suspicious of recent events.

Installment 13

Sept. 18

University Hospital: Main Lobby

Marcus hatches a plan.  "Pack your bags," he tells Frank.  "We're heading to Twin Creeks.  Book us on the next flight.  I'll meet you at home.  In the meantime, I'll deal with Cole.  I'll make up some reason why I won't be around for the next few days."

"Got it," Frank acknowledges, heading toward the parking garage.

Marcus approaches the hospital pay phone to call Cole.  While dialing the number, he is attacked from behind and chloroformed.  He collapses into the man who has been following him.  The man drags him to a wheelchair and wheels him to a car parked outside the main entrance.

University Hospital: Nurses Station

Not long afterward, Cole stops by the hospital, and is surprised to find that Marcus is not in his room.

"Excuse me," he says, approaching Nurse Renwick at the reception desk.  "Gian Capriola isn't in his room.  Has he been taken somewhere for tests?"

"No, Det. Washington," Gail earnestly replies.  "He was released.  You just missed him."

      "Released?!?"

"Yes.  Apparently, he made a miraculous recovery.  He left with his new housemate."

"Thank you," Cole says in a daze.  As he walks away from the desk, he retrieves his cell phone from his belt and calls Marcus at home.

"Yo.  This is Frank Cain," states Frank's answering machine.  "I'm out making my next million right now, so I'm way too busy to talk to you.  But leave me a message after the beep anyways and, uh, maybe I'll get back to you."

Cole is troubled to hear Frank's voice on the outgoing message.

"What the hell?" wonders Cole.  "Cain is Gian's new housemate?"

Frank's Apartment

As time passes, Frank paces the living room, beginning to believe that Marcus has double-crossed him.  "Where the hell is that son of a bitch?!?"

Losing his patience, Frank drives back to the hospital to see if Marcus has been detained.

Somewhere on Route 7

Awakening, a disoriented Marcus realizes that he is in a dark confined place.  Bound and gagged, his hands tied behind him, he listens to the sounds emanating from outside of his enclosure.  Feeling movement, Marcus concludes that he is in the trunk of a moving automobile.

He tries to free himself from bondage, but is unsuccessful.  He feels around behind him, searching for something to use as a tool to break free of the ropes constricting his hands, or as a weapon.  Marcus shifts uncomfortably, hoping to find an escape lever, standard on all late-model vehicles.  But he cannot successfully reposition himself.

Eventually, the car stops, and the trunk is opened.  Marcus is picked up, carried by a large man into a cavernous building, and thrown on the floor.

A man rips his blindfold off to reveal that they are in a warehouse.  Blinking as his eyes adjust to the bright fluorescent lights, Marcus makes out a figure before him.  As the person approaches, Marcus recognizes the man standing before him.  An icy chill runs down his spine.

"What do you have to say for yourself?" asks the man before kicking him in the stomach.

As he struggles to regain his breath, Marcus utters, "I'm sorry...papa."

Frank's Apartment

Ominous clouds form overhead as Frank returns home after his search for Marcus at the hospital proved fruitless.  He turns on the lights as he enters his darkened living room and lets out a gasp at the sight of someone sitting in his easy chair.

"Where the hell is Gian?!?" Cole demands as he jumps to his feet.

"I swear, I haven't seen him since he was released from the hospital this afternoon!" Frank tells him.

"I know you're up to something Cain.  What is your game?!?"  Cole rushes forward, pushing Frank against the wall.  "Tell me what you know!" he menaces.

"Get offa me!" Frank shouts, pushing Cole away and walking to the other side of the room.  "Who the hell do you think you are?  This is police harassment.  I'm gonna call my lawyer!"

Cole lunges at Frank, prompting him to grab a dining chair, as if to repel a lion.

"I'm here as a private citizen now, Cain," counters Cole.  "And it's just you and me in here.  Now, tell me, what do you know about Gian—everything!"

"I swear, man, nothing!  He told me to come home and he'd meet me here later.  That's all!"

"What is it you want from him?" Cole roars.  "Why did you ask him to move in with you?"

"My, my rent just went up and, and he needed a place," Frank lies.  "It just seemed like a good deal for the both of us."

"So who the hell is Sam?" Cole challenges.

"Yeah, alright.  Sam's my middle name," Frank defends.  "Look, you and I didn't hit it off too good and I asked him not to tell you he was living with me until I had a chance to patch things up with you.  Honest!"

Cole's cell phone rings.  "Washington," he answers, glaring at Frank.

The call is from the SMPD forensics department.  The CSI agent explains that they've made more headway in decoding the journal.  They believe that they've uncovered the address of an abandoned warehouse located on the outskirts of town that may be connected to the case.

"Uh huh," Cole continues as he turns way from Frank who breathes a sigh of relief.  "Uh huh.  Thanks for the update.  Good job, guys."

He returns his attention to Frank.  "If I find out you had anything to do with the attempts on Gian's life, I'll be back, and I'll make you pay," Cole threatens Frank as he storms out of the apartment.

"That bastard must have given me the slip and headed to Twin Creeks without me," Frank says to himself as he picks up his overnight bag and heads outside.  "I'll catch up with that son of a bitch," he spits.

A clap of thunder overhead warns that a rare late-summer storm is brewing.

Southbound on Route 7

"Just before midnight," Cole notes while driving toward the industrial section on the outskirts of town.  Cole calls in an APB for the missing Gian Capriola.  Tiny dots of mist appear on his windshield as he heads to the warehouse to look for clues.

Sept. 19

San Marcello Warehouse District

As the rain intensifies, Cole arrives at the warehouse.  He spots two late-model cars parked in front of the building, a silver Lexus ES300 and a blue Ford Taurus.  Lights peer through the high windows of the old warehouse.

Cole parks further down the road and exits his vehicle.  As he approaches the building, he hears voices inside.  Cautiously, he makes his way to a supply of pallets and crates stored against a wall.  Piling several crates onto each other, Cole climbs to the top of the rickety, makeshift scaffolding to gain a vantage point.

"Gian!" he gasps as he witnesses an older, olive-skinned man with salt-and-pepper hair berate Marcus.  Quietly, Cole calls for backup, and walks around the length of the building, looking for a way to sneak in.  He finds a door left ajar.

"What the hell did you do with my jewels, you little punk?!?" the older man demands.

      "I don't remember!" shouts Marcus.

As the man begins to brutally beat Marcus, Cole enters the room with his gun drawn.

"This is Det. Washington of the San Marcello Police Department.  I need you to step away from that man right now," he shouts.

However, Cole is not aware of the older man's accomplice, the stocky man who's been following Marcus—the same man who accompanied Leo Corelli the night they chased Marcus into the street where he was struck by Frank's car.

The thickset man attacks Cole from behind, knocking him to the ground.  As they wrestle, the older man aims his revolver at Cole.

Just as he squeezes off a shot, Marcus rushes him, and the bullet narrowly misses Cole.

The stout man grabs Cole's gun and, as the two men struggle, a shot rings out.

Cole falls forward onto the man's chest.

Slowly, he sits up and looks down, noticing blood on his hands.

The man is dead.  Cole rises to see the older man escape with Marcus in tow.  He runs after them, making it to the door in time to see them speed away in one of the cars parked when Cole arrived.

In a blinding rainstorm, Cole gives chase while dialing into headquarters.  "This is Det. Washington.  I'm in pursuit of a late-model silver Lexus ES300 heading north on Rt. 7, approaching downtown.  I need backup."

Downtown San Marcello

The Lexus makes a sharp right-hand turn onto Claire Ave. then an immediate left on Celeste St.  The evasive maneuvers prove successful.  Cole loses the speeding vehicle downtown.

He continues to drive back and forth on the deserted downtown streets, finally tracking the Lexus.  Cole continues to follow, closing the gap between them.  Catching up, he attempts to run them off of the road by sideswiping their vehicle as it approaches the Hollis Ave. Bridge which overlooks the Emerson River.

The driver swerves into Cole's car, causing him to lose control on the rain-slicked pavement.  Cole's vehicle careens into an embankment!

"Cole!" Marcus screams, looking out the rear windshield.  "We have to go back.  He could be injured!"

"Shut up!" the man roars.  "Serves him right.  He has no business chasing us.  This is between you and me."

Marcus desperately struggles to free his hands from their bonds.

In his car, Cole lies slumped over the steering wheel, unconscious.

On the next installment of Tomorrow Waits For No One:

Vincenzo to Marcus: "That was the last stupid mistake you'll ever make."

Marcus to Cole: "Further evidence that I'm no good for you, Cole.  I've lied to you."

Gail to herself: "No, Philip, I’d like you to get to know Rhonda the way I see her."
