Previously, on Tomorrow Waits For No One: Cole shared with his partner Det. Ginny Riley that he doesn't believe that "Gian" (Marcus) is faking his amnesia.

DA Philip Benton and Cole clashed over protocol.  Cole admitted to Det. Riley that he's hoping DA Benton will not be reelected.  Philip apologized to Rhonda over their argument.  They left for lunch, planning to make love.

Dr. Martinez introduced Dr. Margaret Park to "Gian" (Marcus).  She made plans to work with him to regain his memory.  Det. Washington returned to see "Gian" (Marcus).  Their mutual attraction was palpable as the detective took fingerprints.  Later, Cole ran the fingerprints but there was no match in the national database.

Cole received the crime scene report showing that Frank was not at fault in the accident that put Marcus in the hospital.  Frank was relieved that he was no longer a figure in the investigation.  He vowed to find a way to profit from Marcus's situation.

That night, a man entered Marcus's room and injected something into his IV.

Installment 4:

.

Sept. 4

University Hospital: Patient Room

“He’s in V-fib!” shouts Dr. Martinez.

Gail applies gel to the defibrillator paddles and hands them to the doctor.

Dr. Martinez grabs the paddles.  “Set it at 200.”

        Gail adjusts the defibrillator controls.

“Clear!” shouts the doctor as the other clinicians step back from the patient.

Marcus’s body seizes as 200 joules of electricity courses through it.

Dr. Martinez waits momentarily for a response, staring at the heart monitor.  But Marcus’s heart rate is still dangerously sporadic.  “300,” he instructs.

        Gail adjusts the controls again

        “Clear!”

Another jolt of electricity surges through Marcus’s body.  Again, no change.

        “Give me 360.  Clear!”

After a few seconds, Marcus’s heart rate begins to stabilize but is still irregular.

“He’s stopped breathing!” Gail cries.  “Pulse ox is 88 and falling.

The medical team works feverishly to keep Marcus from slipping into a coma.  He is intubated to allow Gail to pump air into his lungs.  After several tense minutes, Marcus is resuscitated.  The team breathes a collective sigh of relief.

Upon receiving the results of Marcus’s blood tests showing an abnormally high potassium chloride content, Dr. Martinez administers calcium gluconate, sodium bicarbonate, glucose, and insulin, which stabilizes Marcus’s heart.

Marcus begins to rally and is rushed to the ICU.

“Odd,” comments Dr. Martinez.  He examines the IV bag, suspiciously.  “Nurse Renwick.”

        “Yes, Doctor.”

“Please have the lab test the contents of this IV, the bag and the tube, and have them report their findings to me ASAP.”

“Certainly, Dr. Martinez,” Gail responds quizzically.

SMPD: Detectives Squad Room

Before leaving for the day, Cole sits at his desk to read the San Marcello Bulletin online.  He becomes infuriated when he discovers ‘Gian’s’ picture on the front page with the headline, “Mystery Man Attacked at University Hospital, Police Baffled.”

The phone rings.

“What!” shouts Cole into the receiver.

“Detective, this is Dr. Martinez.”

“What the hell is going on over there, and why wasn’t I called earlier?!?” Cole demands.

“I assume you’ve learned about the attack,” the doctor responds.  “The news media has descended on the hospital.”

“What happened?!?  The Bulletin says that Gian may have been intentionally poisoned.”

“That’s what I suspect,” confirms the doctor.  “We’re testing his IV for potassium chloride.  I’m waiting for the results.”

“How did the Bulletin even know?” Cole demands.

“Apparently, a reporter happened to be in the hospital at the time John Doe went into cardiac arrest,” starts Dr. Martinez.  “He overheard me share my suspicions of an attack with a colleague, and called in his report to the paper.”

“I’ll be right there,” Cole tells the doctor.

University Hospital: Nurses Station

Cole returns to the hospital to find a media circus.  He quickly orders officers to secure the ICU.

Dr. Martinez informs the detective that ‘Gian’s’ heart attack was indeed the result of foul play.  “John Doe’s IV was injected with potassium chloride, which caused hyperkalemia.”

“English, please, Doctor,” pleads Cole.

“Someone poisoned him.  He nearly died,” Dr. Martinez states.

“This is deadly serious now,” Cole says, vowing to get to the bottom of this mystery.  “We’re looking at attempted murder.”

Sept. 5

University Hospital: ICU

Marcus regains consciousness and begins to recover his strength.  Cole stops by to visit.

“How are you feeling?” he asks tenderly.

“Like I was hit by a speeding car…” Marcus replies weakly.  “…Again.”

Cole smiles.  “Well, you’re strong enough to crack jokes.  That’s a good sign.”

“What happened?” asks Marcus.

“You just concentrate on getting better,” Cole evades.

Marcus sees through his ruse.  “Detective, something big happened to me last night.  Just tell me the truth.”

Cole sighs and his demeanor becomes dour.  “You were poisoned.”

Marcus appears confused as he props himself up in the bed.

“Someone made an attempt on your life last night, Gian.”

“What?!?” Marcus reacts, becoming agitated.  “What do you mean?”

“Someone slipped into your room and injected your IV with potassium chloride,” Cole explains.  “Your heart rate wigged out for awhile and you stopped breathing but Dr. Martinez was able to bring you around.”

“I…I almost died?”

“You came pretty close.  But you survived,” Cole supportively adds.

“Someone tried to kill me?  Why would anyone want me dead?”

“That’s the latest in a long line of questions that surround you,” Cole gravely states.  “And, I gotta let you know that I still don’t have any leads on your identity.”

Marcus sighs weakly and frowns.

“And, given that you are now the victim of an attempted murder, I’m focusing my investigation on finding who tried to kill you.  But don’t worry.  I have an officer guarding the ICU door,” offers Cole.  “You’ll be safe now.”

A dejected Marcus implores Cole not to stop trying to discover who he is.  “Please don’t give up on me, detective.  I have to know who I am, where I come from…how I got here.”

“I didn’t say I was giving up on the search for your past,” Cole assures him.  “You’ll have to just trust me, okay?  I’ll keep you safe—and answer all of the questions about who you are.”

Frank Cain’s Apartment

Sitting at his kitchen table, wearing nothing but an old bathrobe, Frank reads in the Bulletin about the commotion at the hospital and is amazed when he realizes that Marcus’s identity remains a mystery to the authorities.

“Wow.  This is bigger than I imagined,” he thinks to himself.  “If someone’s trying to kill this Marcus guy, knowing his identity could be valuable.”

Frank gets up and walks to a desk in his living room, retrieving Marcus’s wallet from a drawer.  He sits at his computer and looks up the address on Marcus’s driver’s license.

195 Colonial Drive, Twin Creeks, Virginia,” Frank murmurs as he types in the information.  A map of Marcus’s neighborhood comes onto the screen.  “Hoo.  Looks like a nice ’hood.  Country club right there.  Oh yeah, this guy’s loaded.”

Frank decides to pay Marcus a visit in the hospital to see if he can determine if Marcus’s amnesia is a scam or not.

As Frank chuckles to himself, a mysterious man peers at him through the window. *possible cliffhanger*

University Hospital: Nurses Station

Gail files patient charts in the nurses office behind the reception desk.

Rhonda strides in.  “I’m here for my appointment with Dr. Riley,” she announces to the nurse on duty.  “I’m Rhonda Lynn.”

Gail’s ears perk up and she peaks around the corner to assess the woman occupying Philip’s time.

“Yes, Ms. Lynn,” starts the reception nurse.  “I’m sorry to inform you, now that you’re here, but Dr. Riley had to drive to El Camino Hospital for an obstetric emergency.”

“What?!?” bellows Rhonda.

“We tried to phone you but your assistant told us that you were on your way.”

“This is outrageous!  Do you know how long it took me to get this appointment?!?

“Yes, Ms. Lynn——”

“Do you have any idea what I had to do to juggle my schedule to fit this appointment?!?”

“I really am sorry.  I——”

As Gail listens to the commotion, her blood begins to boil.

“This is unacceptable.  I’d like to speak to your supervisor,” Rhonda continues.

“Ms. Lynn, there really isn’t anything anyone can do about this now.  Dr. Riley——”

“Are you telling me that you refuse to allow me to speak to your superiors?”

“No, Ms. Lynn.  I’ll be happy to——”

“Then I expect to be speaking to someone who will rectify this deplorable situation immediately,” demands Rhonda.

Gail steps out from the nurses office to face Rhonda.  “Ms. Lynn.  May I help you?”

University Hospital: Hallway

Frank arrives and heads straight for the ICU but is prevented from entering by the police officer guarding his room.

“I’m here to see, uh, the patient,” he begins.  “Um, John Doe.”

“This patient is not allowed visitors.”

“Well, I’ll only be a minute,” argues Frank.  “I just want to see how he’s doing.”

“I’m sorry sir,” states the guard.  “This patient is not allowed any visitation.  Police orders.”

“Oh, come on,” Frank smiles with a wink.  “It’s not like he’ll be in any danger.  You’ll be right outside this room.  No one will ever know you…bent the rules.”

“I can’t allow that,” the guard pointedly tells him.  “Only authorized personnel allowed in.”

“Yeah, I understand,” Frank bitterly agrees.  Turning around, he leaves.

University Hospital: Nurses Station

“Uh, oh, um…” a startled Rhonda stutters.  “Are you the supervisor on duty?”

“I’m nurse Renwick,” she greets before turning her attention to her coworker.  “Why don’t you take a break.  I’ll take over now.”

The other nurse mouths the words “thank you” to Gail and quickly exits.

“Oh, this is ridiculous,” carps Rhonda.  “First, you people cancel my appointment without notifying me in advance, now I have a revolving door of incompetent peons to deal with.”

“Now, Ms. Lynn, again, we do sincerely apologize.  I’m sure that you can appreciate that Dr. Riley had to scrub in on an emergency fetal surgery for a patient of hers.  You would want her to be at your disposal if ever you were in dire need, wouldn’t you?”

“Well…why, of course——”

“And you do realize that Dr. Riley is one of the top obstetricians in the nation.  Well, I’m sure her reputation was one of the reasons you’ve chosen her as your gynecologist.  An accomplished woman of distinction, such as yourself, will only have the best medical care available.  Am I right?”

“You’ve made your point,” Rhonda acquiesces.

“Well, now that we’ve established that, let me reschedule your appointment,” assures Gail as she sits in front of the computer.  “I see here that this was for a routine checkup?”

“Yes,” Rhonda replies, mollified.

“I’m sure you have a very demanding schedule.  Why don’t I call your assistant and work with her to get you in as soon as possible?”

“Uh…yes.  Yes, that would be acceptable.”  Rhonda agrees.

“Thank you, Ms. Lynn.  I’ll get right on it.”  Gail picks up and begins dialing, smiling at Rhonda who simply turns and slinks away.

Frank’s Apartment

When Frank returns home, he is horrified to find his home in shambles.

“What the…?!?” he exclaims.  “Who the hell——”

From behind, a man attacks Frank.  The two scuffle, and Frank rips the man’s jacket.  Neither of them notices a small black book fall to the floor from the man’s pocket.  They continue to struggle, all the while, Frank tries to get a glimpse at the man with whom he’s fighting.  But the stranger keeps Frank faced away from him.

As they tussle, a lamp is knocked to the floor.  The man picks it up and bashes it over Frank’s head, knocking him out.  Frank slumps over, face down on the debris-strewn floor.

The man rifles through Frank’s pockets as he lies motionless on the floor.  He rises and gives the apartment another inspection, looking for anything he may have missed.  While looking through the drawers of Frank’s computer desk, he comes across Marcus’s wallet.  The stranger gazes at the ID with a look of hatred.

Having found what he sought, the stranger escapes, leaving behind Frank’s lifeless body.

On the next installment of Tomorrow Waits For No One:

Cole to Frank: “Could it be that there’s something you’re not telling me?”

Rhonda to Philip: “I’m serious, Philip!.  You can’t keep blowing me off.  I simply won’t have it!”

Officer Hardwick to Cole: “Boss, I’m at SFO now.  Cain’s on his way to Twin Creeks, Virginia.”

Det. Riley to Cole: “CSI discovered a coded journal at the scene of the crime.  The man who tried to kill Gian may not be working alone.”

Frank to himself: “Either you’re a ghost, Marcus Aurelius Lazano, or you pulled quite a scam.”
