Previously on Tomorrow Waits For No One: Cole followed a bloody trail to the top floor of the hospital, under construction.  He found "Gian" (Marcus) hiding in a ventilation shaft but was stabbed by the man chasing him.  Before the man had a chance to attack Marcus, Cole shot him dead.  After treatment, Marcus discovered Cole was his hospital roommate.  Cole learned that Leo Corelli, a notorious mobster from Twin Creeks, VA, was the man who attacked "Gian".  Marcus did not recollect the name.

That night, Cole and Marcus shared their first kiss.  In the morning, Frank Cain asked Dr. Park if he could speak to "Gian" (Marcus).  She agreed and introduced them.  Frank apologized for running him over and vowed to be his "guardian angel."

Gail met Philip for drinks at the Valley Towers to discuss Ann's bridal shower.  Philip gave Gail a list of women to invite.  Gail admitted that she'd overheard an argument he had with Rhonda but Philip declined to discuss it.

Sept. 9

University Hospital: Parking Lot

Upon returning to his car, Frank wonders if Marcus must really have amnesia.

"Huh.  I was sure he was faking it all along, but now I don't know," he thinks to himself as he climbs into his car.  "I wonder if there's a way to get my hands on the missing jewels in spite of his amnesia."

Sept. 10

University Hospital: Dr. Martinez's Office

"I'll be out of your way in just a moment," Dr. Martinez says as Dr. Park enters with Marcus.

"I don't want to rush you," apologizes Dr. Park.

Dr. Martinez fishes some paperwork out of a file drawer.  "No rush.  I'm just running a bit behind.  But I have everything I'll need now.  Have a good session."

"Thank you," Dr. Park and Marcus say in unison.  They each take a seat.

Dr. Park resumes her therapy with Marcus.  "Now, just relax and listen to the sound of my voice," Dr. Park begins.  She guides him through a series of soothing images.

Marcus enters a trancelike state as he follows Dr. Park's voice back in time.  Back to the night he was hit by Frank's car.  He envisions a secluded forested area lighted only by the moonlight.  He sees a road up ahead.  As he comes to the highway, he looks up to see the oncoming headlights of an approaching car.

In the middle of the vision, Marcus has a vivid flashback to his childhood.  In it, he is being beaten by his father.  Visibly shaken, Marcus's eyes pop open as he shivers with fright.

"Gian, what is it?" asks Margaret with concern.  "Did you have a memory?"

Fearing the truth, he misleads Dr. Park.  "No!  I mean…yes.  I…it…it was…I flashed back to the attack the other night," Marcus covers, referring to Leo Corelli's murder attempt.  "It was just so…awful.  I can't believe he'd do that to me.  How could anyone do something like that?"

"Gian, you've been through a lot lately," she comforts.  "Why don't we end this session, and try again soon."

University Hospital: Patient Room

Marcus returns to his room to discover that Cole has packed and is ready to return home.

"So, my injuries aren't as bad as originally thought.  The doctors decided to let me recuperate at home," Cole announces.

"Hey, that's…that's great," Marcus replies unenthusiastically, his mind still focusing on the memory of his childhood abuse.

"Gian, it's okay.  I'm continuing to work on your case," reassures Cole.

Marcus does not divulge that he's beginning to have memories of his past.  "Yeah.  That's great," says Marcus, becoming more present.  "I'm glad that you're getting better so soon."

"I'll be in touch," Cole says as he approaches Marcus, placing his hand on his shoulder.  "You're my top priority."

He pulls Marcus close, and the two men steal a kiss.

      "I gotta go."

"Yeah," Marcus responds in a daze.

After Cole leaves, more memories begin flooding Marcus's mind.  He ascertains that he's had an extensive criminal career.  Memories of shoplifting and drug dealing flash into his mind.

"Oh my God," he cries.  "I can't believe I did those things."

As the memories continue, he begins to realize that he is not happy with his life thus far, and resolves to use his amnesia to make a change for the better.

"This has got to end.  I can't let anyone know what I've done.  That's all over now.  I'm not going to let my past haunt me!"

Sept. 11

SMPD: Detectives Squad Room

"Where the hell is the DNA report on the Cain break-in?" shouts Cole into the phone.  "I don't care how overloaded you are down there.  It's been more than a week.  This is ridiculous."  He pauses then scowls.  "Next Monday or Tuesday?!?  Does Chief Evans know about this?  Yeah, yeah.  He's told me about the budget constraints.  Just hurry up, will you?  "Can you believe this?" he angrily exhorts as he slams down the phone.

"Come on Cole," Ginny chides.  "You know how slow the lab can be.  Their case load's pretty high right now.  Just chill for a few more days."

"Yeah, right.  Chill..." he mumbles to himself.

Santa Lorena County Building: DA's Office

"Oh, Philip!" Gail cries as she barges into his office.  "Everything's falling apart!"

"Gail, I'm right in the middle of something at the moment," he counters, covering the mouthpiece of his phone.  "Why don't you see Donna about making an appointment?"

"Oh!  I'm so sorry.  Donna wasn't at her desk.  But Philip, it's all a mess now.  The bridal shower is off."

Philip breathes a heavy sigh.  "May I call you back?" he asks the party on the line.  "Thank you."  Philip hangs up the phone as he rises from his desk chair.  "Now, Gail, what's all the fuss?  Why are you canceling my sister's shower?"

"I'm so sorry for interrupting," she apologizes.  "But I'm not canceling anything.  Ann's done it.  She's ruined everything!"

SMPD: Chief Evans's Office

Believing that ‘Gian's' life is no longer in danger, Police Chief Evans summons Det. Washington to his office.  "I wanted you to know, since the man who tried to kill John Doe is deceased, I've ordered the removal of the police guard from his room."

"You did what?!?" Cole erupts.  "We don't know that he's safe!"

"Watch your tone, Detective," the chief warns.  "I'm afraid that you're overspending the budget on this case already, what with 24-hour surveillance on Frank Cain," Evans glowers.  "And your trip to Twin Creeks——"

"Which was paid for with my own personal money," interjects Cole.

"Then I don't expect it to show up on a future expense report," Evans cautions.

"No, sir," promises Cole.  "But Corelli might not have been working alone," he stresses.  "There may be others after Gian."

"I'm sorry.  My decision is final," Evans states, closing the matter.  "Look son, you're on leave now.  Use this time off to relax.  You need to distance yourself from this case."

      "Yes, sir," Cole feigns.

"Now, go home and rest!" demands the Chief.

Santa Lorena County Building: DA's Office

"How, exactly, has my sister ruined everything?" Philip asks Gail as he walks around the front of his desk to face her.  "Not that I'm saying she's not capable of causing some serious damage.  But what has she done now?"

"Well, everything is in place," Gail explains.  "I've reserved the Valley Towers banquet room, invited all of the guests, arranged a buffet with the caterer.  Everything's set for this Saturday afternoon."

      "Sounds good so far."

"Yes.  Everything was going along perfectly," agrees Gail.  "But then Ann made plans to spend the entire day at Lujoso!"

"Ah, yes.  Annie does love a day at the spa."

"Philip, what am I going to do?" pleads Gail.

"Let me think." Philip pauses, contemplating a solution.  "I've got it.  I'll have my assistant call Ann, pretending to represent Lujoso.  I'll have her explain that, as an exemplary repeat client, she's entitled to complementary limo service.  Then I'll arrange for a car to pick Annie up and drive her to the Valley Towers where you can greet her."

"Oh, Philip.  That is simply brilliant!" Gail exclaims as she leans forward to kiss him on the cheek.

At that moment, Rhonda enters the office, catching Philip and Gail in what appears to be a compromising position.  "What the hell is going on here?!?" she demands.

University Hospital: Dr. Martinez's Office

Another session with Dr. Park causes Marcus to recover more memories.  Marcus relaxes as she guides him into a meditative state.  Again, the doctor leads Marcus back in time to the night of the car accident.  But just as he remembers the headlights of Frank's car, he is transported to his childhood.

But the details are spotty: being beaten by his father; standing over a woman's body, holding a bloody lamp; sitting in a police interrogation room, berated by a detective questioning about the death of his mother; breaking into a warehouse to steal computer parts; sitting on the witness stand in a packed courtroom, treated hostilely by an attorney who badgers him about the death of another man; sneaking precious jewels out of a museum; dragging a dead body into a room; torching a house.

Marcus sits up, eyes wide open, as he begins to breathe rapidly.

"Why have you become so agitated, Gian?" asks the doctor.

Marcus pauses for a moment before taking a deep breath.  "I…I just," he stutters.  "I can't get the images of Leo Corelli's attack out of my mind," he tells her, denying the truth.

"Alright, Gian.  We'll end this session and try again tomorrow."

"Thank you Dr. Park," Marcus says as he rises and walks to the door.

Santa Lorena County Building: DA's Office

"Uh, Rhonda, darling," Philip says, regaining his composure.  "This is not what I suspect you're thinking."

"And, what am I thinking, dear?" Rhonda demands.

"This is Gail Renwick, Roger Manning's cousin," he introduces.

"We've met."  Rhonda looks Gail up and down contemptuously before returning her attention to Philip.  "And this explains why she was slavering all over you, how, exactly?"

"Ms. Lynn, I have to apologize," Gail begins.  "I got a little carried away.  You see, I'm organizing Ann's bridal shower."

"I still fail to see a connection between that and your lips on the man I'm dating," Rhonda cattily states.

"Rhonda, that is uncalled for!" Philip snaps.  "The shower is to be a surprise.  Ms. Renwick came to me because Ann made an appointment at the spa the same day.  I came up with a solution to the conflict and Gail was simply showing her appreciation."

      "I'll bet," Rhonda sneers.

"Well, uh…thanks again, Philip.  I'll, um, I'll leave you two alone now."  Gail turns to Rhonda.  "It was…a pleasure to see you again."

"Yes, we must do it again some time," replies Rhonda sarcastically.

As Gail closes the door behind her, she hears the beginnings of another argument.  She smiles to herself and leaves.

University Hospital: Nurses Station

After the session, Dr. Park discusses the situation with Dr. Martinez.  "I'm afraid the trauma from the attack is keeping Gian from delving further into his past."

"Could the other night's events have caused him to further regress?" Dr. Martinez asks.

"That is a possibility," she tells him.  "Though I still feel we are moving forward at this point."

"Good," Dr. Martinez replies.  "Please keep me posted on his progress."

University Hospital: Patient Room

Alone in his hospital room, Marcus relives much of his awful past, and recollects growing up in Twin Creeks.

Yet, he still cannot remember his name.

Sept. 12

University Hospital: Patient Room

Frank visits Marcus again.  "How are you doing today?" he cheerily asks.

"Uh, I'm fine…fine," Marcus distractedly answers.

"Fine, huh?" queries a leery Frank.  "If you're so fine, why are you sitting in bed, moping?"

"I'm not moping," Marcus sighs.  "But I'm so frustrated, still not knowing who I am."

"Yeah, I'm sure it takes a lot out of you, trying so hard to remember.  Take my friend George Moore," Frank starts, dropping the name of the man who prosecuted Marcus in Twin Creeks in 1993.

Marcus appears to have some recognition.

      "What, you know him?"

"The name sound familiar," replies Marcus, struggling to remember.

"Yeah, he's a, uh, a prosecutor back east," Frank adds, dangling another tidbit of information.

Marcus cocks his head to one side, trying to grab a memory that seems just out of reach.  Frank realizes that Marcus does not recollect the name and decides to move on.

"Anyway, he's a real forgetful guy," Frank continues.  "He always spends so much time trying to find things he's misplaced."

"Yeah.  Imagine misplacing your entire life," Marcus meekly adds.

"Tell me about it.  Ya know, I'm sorry," Frank says as he gets up to leave.  "You look like you could use some rest.  I'm gonna go now."

"Thanks Frank.  I'm afraid I'm just not good company today."

"Forget about it," Frank replies.  "I'll check in on you soon."

After Frank leaves, Dr. Martinez arrives to update Marcus on his condition.  "Gian, I have some good news for you."

"I could sure use some right about now."

"Well, your physical injuries have healed well enough that you'll soon be released," he reports.

Marcus appears crestfallen.  "Released?  Where will I go?"

On the next installment of Tomorrow Waits For No One:

Rhonda to Philip: "Oh, don't be naïve.  That woman deliberately kept me off the invitation list."

Paige to Gail: "Oh, honey.  I've heard about her.  She's got quite a nasty reputation."

Frank to Marcus: "Whoa.  As it turns out, maybe you’re my guardian angel.  You could really save me if you moved in."
